Unusual sharks – Brazilian luminous

This small, but very insidious fish, first described by the French naturalists in the early 19th century, reaches 56 cm long, and is known to saying the pieces of flesh from his victims, which may be several times large. For the first time, the glowing shark was caught off the coast of Brazil, so the word was fixed in her name «Brazilian».

In the Atlantic, it is most often possible to meet the Bahamas and in the waters of the southern coast of Brazil, and in the Pacific Ocean – At the Hawaiian Islands. This shark lives mainly in the open ocean at depths of up to 3.7 km and therefore rarely meets with people. Scientists suggest that in the evening it rises to the upper layers of water, and the dawn is descended back.

Brazilian shark hunts both a small amount of prey and in large marine inhabitants (whales, sharks, dolphins, sea seals), leaving on them characteristic round wounds. Often these sharks parasitize on large marine inhabitants. To bite off a piece from the victim, she first squeezed to her body with his lips, without giving herself to throw off, and then crashes into the flesh with their sharp teeth and turns his body around the axis, cutting a round piece. Then she sucks him in the mouth and eats. On average, the traces of the bites of this shark have up to 7 cm in diameter and a depth of up to 2 cm.

Although the Brazilian glowing shark is considered not dangerous for people, since it rises to the surface only in the dark, still a few of its attacks per person are documented. In one case, the flock of these fish attacked the underwater photographer, immersed in the open sea. In other cases – Attacied on a swimmer swimming the strait between the islands in Hawaii, and also kicked one of the cylinders of catamarans of the Russian traveler Anatoly Kulik, during the Pacific Swimming.

Unusual sharks - Brazilian luminous

It is worth noting that the Brazilian shark has a strong bite, however, small fins and weak muscles do not allow her to chase potential prey, because it most often in one place in the ambush wait for a sacrifice for a long time. Strong green luminescent glow, providing photofractions on the abdominal part of her body. This glow makes her silhouette less clear when looking at below, so the victims instead of the shark notice only the dark unheoming «collar» In the area of its gills, very similar to the silhouette of a small fish. And when the shark is a flock, it looks like a flock of small fish.

Interesting fact: Brazilian luminous shark, unlike most of its relatives, does not drop, and swallows broken teeth. According to the assumptions of scientists, it is possible that this is due to the need for its body in calcium.
